Colonization of people whose pets have MRSA infections

A study is currently being performed by Dr. Scott Weese and Dr. Meredith Faires of the

Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. This study is part of a broader research program involving MRSA in animals and movement of MRSA between animals and humans.

Who is eligible?

People from the United Kingdom, United States and Canada whose pets currently have an MRSA infection are eligible to enroll. People whose pet has developed infection in a veterinary clinic and whose pet is still hospitalized are no eligible.

What is the study being done?

This study is evaluating movement of MRSA between people and animals. Results will be used to provide a greater understanding of MRSA in animals and humans, and to develop household infection control recommendations that might decrease transmission of MRSA.

What does the study involve?

The study involves collection a nasal swabs from consenting people in the household, and completion of a questionnaire. All testing is confidential and is being done for epidemiological research, not diagnosis of infection.

How do I find out more about this study?

Further information can be obtained by contacting Dr. Weese (jsweese@uoguelph.ca) or Dr. Faires (mfaires@hotmail.com). If you are eligible to participate, you will be sent a study information package. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to complete a consent form, provide nasal swabs and complete the questionnaire
