A case of MRSA -- an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection -- has been reported at a Franklin middle school. A person at the Annie Sullivan Middle School tested positive for the infection, according to a letter that was distributed by the school on Friday. "There is no threat to the student population," the letter read, in part. "Additionally, the school will be completely sanitized thoroughly over the weekend by a team of out facilities staff."

A student in the Northampton Area School District has been diagnosed with the staph infection known as MRSA, the district's fourth case this month. According to a letter from Superintendent Linda Firestone, the student attends George Wolf Elementary and is receiving medical care. Because construction work is going on at the school in Bath, students are housed this year at the former Northeast Middle School in Bethlehem. The district informed residents Oct. 1 that three Northampton Area High School students were diagnosed with MRSA.

No other cases of MRSA have been reported at Norwin High School, Superintendent Jack Boylan said, since a student was discovered to have contracted the bacterium last week. "We are hoping that with alerting the parents early and preventing the spread of MRSA that there will be no more outbreaks," Boylan said. Norwin High School Principal Ed Federinko said by informing students on how to protect themselves from MRSA in a letter last week, helped minimize fears. "No one knows when or where it was contracted," Federinko said. According to Federinko, the student was not an athlete and had limited contact with other students, which could have helped stop MRSA from spreading.

A letter was sent out to parents after experts confirmed a case of MRSA, the so-called "superbug," at a local school. The superintendent for Winton Woods schools sent a letter home last Friday to notify parents there is a confirmed case of MRSA at Winton Woods High School. It also says that appropriate actions have been taken to sanitize any suspected areas.

Parents in the Sandy Creek school district have been sent a letter concerning a case of MRSA in the district. School Superintendent Stewart Amell says he mailed the letter to parents on Tuesday telling them about the student. The child is being treated. The letter also advises parents how to prevent the spread of MRSA to other students. Officials would not disclose the school where the case of MRSA was reported. A school board meeting is scheduled for Thursday night in the district.

One week after MRSA was blamed for the death of an Osceola County high school student, another student from the same high school is in the hospital. That Liberty High School student is being tested for the same deadly staph infection on Tuesday.

A fourth incidence of MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant staph infection sometimes called a “superbug,” surfaced in a Mentor school this week, though there is no indication the student contracted the infection at a district facility. School officials learned Sunday morning of the affected child, who attends Lake Elementary School. As a precautionary measure, custodians disinfected areas such as the gym, media center, tech lab, music room, lunch tables, door handles, bathrooms, chairs and desks — “any surface that could potentially harbor bacteria,” according to a news release.

19 Action News has learned a middle school student has been diagnosed with MRSA. The school has thoroughly cleaned the building in wake of the illness. Here is the letter send home to parents advising them of the situation: Dear Parent: This morning, October 6, 2008, we were informed that a student at North Olmsted Middle School tested positive for MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus.) We are appreciative the family came forward allowing us to communicate and work together to prevent the spread of this bacteria. Unless directed by a physician, students with MRSA infections should not be excluded from attending school.

Two more cases of the antibiotic-resistant Staph infection MRSA have emerged in Suffolk County this week -- one a student from Centereach High School and the other a "non-teaching staff" member at East Islip High School. Both cases were reported on their respective school district Web sites, in the form of precautionary notifications to parents of students in the districts. The alerts do not detail exact diagnosis or reporting dates. The Middle Country School District, which operates Centereach, informed parents: "The student has not been in school this week."

Another school year, another case of staph infection in the Lawton Public Schools (LPS).  LPS Communications Director Keith Mitchell says the schools aware of two infections of MRSA this year - both at Lawton High School (LHS).  7News learned of the two infections from the mother of the second student with staph.  She contacted us to ask us to tell viewers how kids can avoid the infection. Staph may seem scary since a sever MRSA infection can lead to death, but most people won't get seriously ill from it.  "Normal, healthy people can carry it, they just don't give it to people," said Critical Care Unit Director Pam Johnson with Comanche County Memorial Hospital.  "It's something we all live with day-to-day on our skin.  It's just those that sometimes develop diseases as the process goes, get it."

Authorities are investigating a case of the skin infection, MRSA which was reported at Gilbert Stuart Middle School in the capital city. We know that school officials have sent parents a letter to inform them about the case, and to give them information about how to keep their children safe. The Department of Health has been notified and the school is being cleaned to prevent any additional cases.

A day after the Bonneville School District confirmed a MRSA case in one of its schools, some parents want to know if it's safe to send their kids to school. For answers Local News 8 turned to the Eastern Idaho Public Health District, which is where serious public health concerns are addressed. Ken Anderson, an epidemiologist there, says if people just wash or sanitize their hands regularly they have nothing have nothing to worry about. "They shouldn't be anymore concerned than when they go to the grocery store and push their cart around," says Anderson.  "Who knows what's on that?  How about the door handle you used coming in here?  I mean public places, they could all have this bacteria on it or any type of bacteria."

Big Island reports first MRSA case of school year

A case of MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, was reported earlier this week at a school in Bedford County. County school spokesman Ryan Edwards said one case of the antibiotic-resistant staph infection was confirmed at Big Island Elementary School. "The child has been treated and has been given medical clearance to return to school," he said. A letter went home to parents this week, and Edwards said the school's custodial staff has "taken routine measures to clean the building." This is the first reported case of MRSA in the school system this year, Edwards said.

Cases of MRSA have been discovered all around the country in public schools and for the second time this year it's hit District 93. "It can be of a fairly deep concern. It gets difficult to heal those kinds of things and we take it fairly serious," says Guy Bliesner of District 93. MRSA is a bacteria that lives on the skin and it is contagious if it comes into contact with an opening on someone else's skin. It's commonly mistaken as a spider bite or a small wound that won't heal. "If you see particularly something like a small boil or small pimple that your not sure where it came from, might bare looking at it," says Bliesner. The faculty at Lincoln High was notified of this infection earlier today and is following strict CDC protocol.

The Knox County Health Department confirms two students have the staph infection MRSA (MUHR'suh) at Knoxville High School. Michele Fishburn is a spokeswoman for the health department. She says so far the school district has done everything it is supposed to do to prevent the spread of the infection, known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

A Knoxville High School student recently was diagnosed with a dangerous form of a staph infection. The student has methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Knoxville District 202 Superintendent Larry Carlton said he does not know whether the student has returned to school, but that the district is taking all precautions to keep the infection from spreading. “As long as the person keeps their open wounds closed, they can attend school just fine,” he said. “We’re doing all we can and we’re stepping up our cleaning procedures.”

A Leesville Road Elementary School student has been hospitalized after being diagnosed with MRSA, Campbell County education officials said Monday. “Apparently the school received word today that he had been hospitalized today with MRSA,” said Cindee Pletke, director of pupil personnel. The student was taken to a doctor June 4 for what looked like a bug bite and given antibiotics, Pletke said. He was diagnosed with MRSA on Friday, June 6, she said. Pletke said the Leesville Road student was at school June 5 and 6 where he participated in field day. The last day of school in Campbell County was June 6. The student was hospitalized Saturday, June 7, after Pletke said he “got significantly worse.” He remains in the hospital but will likely be released in a day or two.

A case of the bacterial skin infection MRSA was confirmed this past week at Don Estridge High Tech Middle School in Boca Raton, school and health department officials reported. The appearance of the malady, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, caused concern in the school system when it was reported in several educational facilities in Palm Beach County last fall.

A Midway Elementary School student has been diagnosed with MRSA, a bacterial infection of the skin that is resistant to the more common forms of antibiotics, although it is successfully treated with other types of antibiotics. In addition, a McCants Middle School support staff employee is currently being treated for MRSA. Although the Midway student’s diagnosis was confirmed to the district today, the student has already undergone treatment and has been cleared to return to school by the student’s physician. The support staff employee is being effectively treated and will not return to school until it is confirmed by a doctor that the person is no longer contagious. Letters were sent home today to students at Midway and McCants to inform parents of the diagnoses. There is no indication at this time that any other students or personnel at Midway or McCants have contracted this infection.
