Lino is an infection control weapon

Natural products such as linseed oil have long been known to possess antibacterial activity. However, it is only in recent years that such activity has been recognised as a potential weapon against healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Linseed oil is a major component of linoleum, and research supported by Forbo Nairn, the Kirkcaldy-based flooring manufacturer, has now quantified this antibacterial activity.

Flooring used to combat superbug

A Scottish flooring manufacturer has claimed its product can help the NHS in Scotland combat the superbug MRSA. Kirkcaldy-based Forbo-Nairn said research indicated that MRSA and other harmful micro-organisms cannot live or breed on its Marmoleum. It said Ormskirk and Southport hospitals in England used its products and had the lowest recorded incidents of MRSA infection in the UK. The Scottish Executive said cleanliness was the best way to prevent MRSA. Forbo-Nairn's Derek Byrne said research conducted by the Nutrition and Food Research Institute and North American Science Associates indicated that its flooring was free of MRSA.
