Crammed hospitals fuel MRSA fears - Cyprus Mail.
Cyprus has one of the highest rates of multi-drug resistant infections, a result of its high use of antibiotics. “After Greece, we dish out antibiotics much more than any other country in Europe,” Health Minister Stavros Malas told the Mail. “Hospitals have air filter systems and we are trying to improve the way patients get moved about hospitals because many times it is the reason such incidents arise,” Malas added. “MRSA is an international problem. In Cyprus we are unfortunately the second worst country (in the EU) in the use of antibiotics. No matter what you do this will unfortunately be a problem although if we stop using antibiotics it would be better.”
