Alaska state health officials say an Anchorage hospital is battling an outbreak of an drug-resistant organism in a neonatal intensive care unit. A state epidemiologist said Wednesday that the Providence Alaska Medical Center has had 14 neonates that contracted mild to moderate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections since March. State epidemiologist Kim Porter said 17 other infants have been found carrying the bacteria on their skin or noses, but did not get sick.
