The quarterly average of MRSA bacteraemia reports for the financial year 2003/04, 1,925, is used as a baseline against which future data are compared. In the most recent quarter, January-March 2011, there were 334 reports of MRSA bacteraemia, representing an 83% decrease relative to the baseline. There has been a 0.9% increase (from 331 reports) in reports for this quarter compared with the previous quarter (October-December 2010), consistent with seasonal uplifts in MRSA bacteraemia reported previously [6]. In comparison with the same period in 2009, reports in January-March 2011 have decreased by 52% (figure 1).
