Calls for hospitals to highlight superbug infections | Courier Mail.
A BRISBANE scientist has called for regular reporting of superbug infections in Australian hospitals after receiving $5 million to develop a new treatment. A team led by chemist Matthew Cooper, of the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience, will use the funding from the UK's Wellcome Trust to alter the structure of the antibiotic, Vancomycin. Professor Cooper said Vancomycin was traditionally known as the "antibiotic of last resort" for bacterial infections, used only when all else had failed. "But with bacteria becoming resistant to other treatments, these 'drugs of last resort' are now in common use," he said.
