News Flash: It's NOT a Spider Bite! (Probably Not, Anyway).
An article by Susan Donaldson James posted on abcnews.com tells the story of a woman who lost her breast from what may have been a toxic spider bite. The woman, Victoria Franklin, and her doctor say the spider was a brown recluse. Franklin lives in Atlanta, which is indeed located in the brown recluse's known habitat. But, skin infections happen there, too. Did a brown recluse bite her? No one will know for sure. By the time the woman sought help she had developed necrosis (dead tissue), something that can happen in both toxic brown recluse bites and serious skin infections like MRSA.
