Search for drug to halt MRSA is abandoned - Press & Journal.
Work to develop new drugs to halt the potentially deadly hospital superbug MRSA has been abandoned due to a lack of funding, it has emerged. In 2008, Aberdeen University professor Jorg Feldmann and a team of international scientists discovered that a protein released naturally by the human body has the power to starve MRSA of the “food” it needs to spread. It was hoped the protein, calprotectin, could be developed into a treatment which would beat the infection, which is killing people in wards all over the world. The team’s findings sparked international interest, including inquiries from a UK-based drug company. Last night Prof Feldmann revealed that private investment of around £2million would be needed to take the findings to the next stage.
