Notre Dame Researchers Say MRSA Drug Looks Promising

Dr. Mobashery's research focuses on a unique protein called Penicillin-binding protein 2a or PBP2a. A combination of organic chemistry, biochemistry and computational components led researchers to their discovery. Using goggles allowed us to get a 3-D look at the protein which is the target. "What we have here is the protein which is the target in MRSA," said Dr. Mobashery. "MRSA of course the difficult bacterium. This is a protein that actually exists in MRSA, the staph infection that is highly resistant to antibiotics." The green you see in the picture is the MRSA protein, and those sticks represent the drug researchers developed. "This is the protein that is indispensable to MRSA for its survival and by having this drug fitting into that cavity, what we have is a process that interferes with the daily existence of MRSA. MRSA cannot cope with it, and it dies," said Dr. Mobashery.
Dr. Mobashery,
My name is Mark Motsiff and I live in Atlanta, GA with my wife and now four year old son, who acquired MRSA when he was one years old. We were told we could not have children and when my son came down with MRSA – I had no idea what it was. It entered his lymphatic system at one years of age and he had a softball size population of MRSA sacks on his left side. Twenty pediatricians from Tampa Children’s Pediatrics could not tell me what was wrong with my son. I understand fully now what it is and I feel like I have my DR in MRSA study. My son is better due to one month on Rifampin and Cylindamyacin. It was up to me to give this to him five times a day. I don’t want this to be a long dissertation – but a true THANK YOU with tears in my eyes! Dr. Mobashery I am on a crusade to bring awareness to this terrible infection and have written to DR. Creech, M.D., M.P.H. Assistant Professor, Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Pediatric Clinical Research Office at Vanderbilt University and Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings this past year, who passed a 5 Million dollar grant to further research for MRSA. Again, I just want to say thank you to you and your staff for all of your long hours and dedication. I cannot thank you enough because of my son. I want to bring as much attention to this as I can and the dire need for a cure. After reading about your patent on PBP2A – tears came to my eyes. Sir ~ I will not rest until the antibiotic and cure for MRSA is on the market and the discovery on PBP2SA is the “Holy Grail”! Thank you so very much. Thank you very much!!!!
Sincerely,
Mark Motsiff
