THE MRSA bug is rampant on intensive care units because 80 per cent of docs NEVER wash their hands. The shocking statistic was revealed in a study of two of the UK’s top hospitals. It found eight out of ten doctors and nurses do not scrub up between treating patients — despite being warned of the risks. MRSA kills more than 800 people a year and is a particular problem in intensive care. Many patients there are recovering from major ops like heart surgery and are touched by medical staff up to 200 times a day. Researchers studied the Royal Free and University College London hospitals for a year. MRSA expert Tony Field said: “There’s no excuse. Hand-washing is a basic part of the job.”
